Boerne outlines water-CIP expansions and reclaimed-water 'purple pipe' that serves new developments

Andrew Wilkinson, the city's utilities engineer, walked the committee through the water capital-improvement plan, stressing that listed projects are driven by new development and account for treatment, pumping and supply needs. He said the water treatment plant at Boerne City Lake will expand from about 1.3 million gallons per day (MGD) toward 1.5 MGD and could expand to 3.0 MGD when needed to serve growth.
Wilkinson described the reclaimed-water distribution as a separate system—"We call it the purple pipe"—fed by treated effluent from the WWTRC and used strictly for irrigation in developments such as Esperanza and Ranches at Creekside. He said the reclaimed system uses separate meters with purple lids and purple irrigation heads to prevent confusion with potable water.
