The City of Fayette council unanimously approved Ordinance 2026-01 after a committee of council members and fire-department staff reached an agreement.
Council members said the ordinance shifts the firefighter work period from a seven-day cycle to a 28-day schedule and will scale payments for volunteer firemen as well as building and electrical inspectors. “Essentially it's going to a 28 day from a seven day work schedule,” the presiding official said while introducing the measure. Council also referenced a memorandum of understanding reached with the fire department that staff will convert into a resolution at the next meeting to formalize department policy.
The ordinance was introduced after a committee — appointed by the mayor and including Councilmen Rogers, Wilson and Herring — met with the fire chief and department staff to resolve earlier disagreements. Council debated and obtained unanimous consent to consider the ordinance at the meeting and then voted to adopt it; councilors recorded a motion and second and a voice vote was reported as unanimous. Council members said the change is administrative and will be accompanied by the formal resolution detailing implementation steps.
