Guest Rachel Haymon updated the Trout Lake Community Council on efforts to develop an early-warning system for lahars and post-fire debris flows.
Haymon said only a single seismometer is currently installed (on Stagman Ridge) and that permits for four of five planned monitoring sites remain pending. She described several detection options under consideration—seismometers to detect ground vibration, infrasound sensors, trip wires in drainages and webcams—and noted one proposed site faces constraints because it overlaps spotted-owl habitat and a nearby archeological resource.
Council members and guests discussed notification mechanisms and community coordination. As Haymon asked, "What does the warning system look like? reverse 911? FEMA funding for sirens? set evacuation routes?" the group flagged the need for a detection-to-notification design and for coordination with the local school for evacuation planning. The group agreed to pursue a letter to the Forest Supervisor and further discussion; Laurie will bring the proposal forward to the council board for next steps.
