The Troup County Board of Commissioners on Aug. 4 approved a rezoning request for 78 Thompson Road that will change 4 acres of a 22.81‑acre parcel from Lakeside Residential to Limited Commercial to permit an RV and boat storage facility.
Planner Austin told the board the parcel was previously split‑zoned and the Board of Zoning and Planning Appeals voted 4–2 in favor of the change. "They move forward with the plan to go ahead and do a boat storage," Austin said, adding that the rezoning application itself carries no special stipulations from the zoning board but that site‑plan requirements and buffers apply. Applicant Cassie Kelly, who lives at 78 Thompson Road, told commissioners the current plan is for 20 spaces and that the site lies on a road that feeds Whitetail and Holiday campgrounds: "The plan currently is for only 20 spaces," Kelly said.
Commissioners asked about acreage, nearby parcels and the process for any variances; Austin said a 30‑foot buffer to adjacent Lakeside Residential areas will be required under the county's unified development ordinance and that Rosen Engineering review and building permits will be required at the site‑plan stage. The board confirmed the item was a first reading but vote‑eligible, and a motion to approve the rezoning passed by voice vote.
Next steps for the applicant include submitting a site plan, meeting Rosen Engineering driveway standards and obtaining any necessary building permits. Austin said any request for variance from buffer or other UDO standards would be handled by planning and zoning.
