Torrington council schedules Aug. 17 public hearings on building code, peddling, taxes and zoning fees

“I will entertain a motion to schedule a public hearing on 08/17/2026 to solicit citizen input regarding amendment of chapter 85, building construction, alteration, renovation, and demolition,” the mayor said when moving the first hearing; the motion was seconded and approved by voice vote. Council members later moved and approved hearings on Chapter 158 (peddling and soliciting), Chapter 187 (property tax relief for certain elderly homeowners) and Chapter 114‑1 (the schedule of fees for zoning and subdivision applications, including a provision to reduce fees if costs are reduced by legislative activity or other activity).
The item on peddling and soliciting was noted as pending approval from the police chief before being finalized on the Aug. 17 agenda. The amendment to Chapter 114‑1 was described as adding a fee‑reduction provision when outside factors lower administrative costs. Each hearing was placed on the Aug. 17 docket by unanimous voice votes during the council’s July 20 meeting.
Next steps: the council will receive public comment at the Aug. 17 hearings and may amend the proposed language before any final ordinance votes.
