Community and student express attendance, schedule concerns to RFISD board

President Kenny Cruzan opened public comment during the Feb. 20 Rockport-Fulton ISD Board of Trustees meeting, where community members and a student raised concerns about attendance and a proposed schedule change.
Community member Brandon Broom told trustees he was concerned that immigration enforcement was affecting student attendance, urging the district to consider how enforcement activity outside schools is reducing classroom presence. Community member Jenny Vander Pluym urged trustees to avoid rushing a move to a 7-period schedule at Rockport-Fulton High School and asked for a longer adjustment period for students and families. Student Avi Singleterry also addressed trustees with concerns about the proposed 7-period schedule at the high school.
The public-comment remarks were not followed by formal board action during the comment period. The board proceeded to staff reports and later approved the 2025–2026 district calendar (Option B) and other operational items on the agenda.
