Central SD 51 board upholds 10-day suspension for Student No. 2024A

The Central School District 51 Board of Education voted on Oct. 17, 2024 to uphold a 10-day suspension for Student No. 2024A after a suspension-review hearing. Board member Michael Fritz moved the finding, which board member Michelle Unes seconded; the motion recorded that "based upon and after the Board's consideration of the evidence and testimony of the suspension review hearing held on October 17, 2024, the Board of Education find that Student No. 2024A is guilty of gross misconduct as charged by the District's Administration in that Student No. 2024A was in violation of Board Policy 7:190 Student Behavior."
The board said the student's continued presence in school posed a threat to the safety of others and/or substantially disrupted school operations, and therefore the ten-day suspension was appropriate. The motion carried on a roll call vote: Jessica Harvey, Dominic Lang, Michelle Unes and Michael Fritz voted yes; there were no nay votes; Kim Blundy, Amy Johnson and Matt Rampenthal were absent. During the suspension the student was provided the opportunity to make up all work without penalty and maintained access to assigned coursework through Google Classroom, according to the minutes.
