Committee approves $42,000 appropriation for recorder’s property-fraud and veterans ads

The Metropolitan Economic Development Committee on a voice vote approved an additional appropriation of $42,000 in the 2026 Marion County Recorder’s budget to fund advertising around property fraud and veterans honors.
JR Reiter, chief deputy recorder, said the authority adopted last November allows the office to invest a portion of the perpetuation fund’s cash into an interest-bearing account in partnership with the Marion County Treasurer. “That money, 100% of that interest money will be used or is being used for advertisements such as billboards, bus ads, radio, and TV promoting the property fraud and also the veterans honors,” Reiter said.
Jenny Carter and committee members noted the appropriation reflects interest the recorder’s office already expects to earn—Reiter said interest runs about $3,500 per month, which equates to roughly $42,000 a year—and the appropriation provides access to those funds. Committee members offered verbal support and no members of the public addressed the item before the committee moved, seconded and approved the measure by voice vote. The appropriation was recorded as passed in committee.
