Indianapolis DPW signal engineer says staffing, backlog and data management shape priorities

Born said he is developing a master spreadsheet that captures the age, volumes and crash history for each signal to tier needs and pair customer complaints against engineering data. "Being able to leverage our consultant staff has been helpful," he said, noting about 460 open customer cases for signal improvements on the engineering side. He also announced DPW is hiring another signal engineer to assist with the workload.
Born described balancing immediate operational "fires" against longer-term corridor retiming, and said ATMS and remote management help shift some workload from field visits to desk-based troubleshooting and scheduling.
