Park lawn project praised; Tree Board reports five new trees and plans for butterfly garden

Council members reported satisfaction with a new park lawn and fertilizing schedule; Tree Board and Garden Club volunteers planted five trees Sept. 25 and proposed Monarch Watch registration and a future pergola at the park entrance.
Council member Mike Mumper and Tree Board chair Nancy Thill updated the council on park landscaping work and volunteer involvement. Mike said contractors completed the lawn project and staff will fertilize and mow in November and again in spring; staff also assisted with irrigation and will manage watering and leaf cleanup under existing maintenance arrangements.
Nancy Thill said the Village planted five trees on Sept. 25 under an MDNR grant: a Black Gum, two Ironwood, one Dogwood and one Sugar Maple. She said metal fencing was installed to protect the new trees from deer and that about 33% of the Garden Club volunteered to help with spring planting. Thill described conversations with Pizzo Gardens on a butterfly garden and reported support from the Michiana Women's Club for pursuing Monarch Watch registration and certification.
Thill suggested a pergola at the park entrance as funding becomes available; Mike Mumper and staff will continue coordinating irrigation, planting and maintenance work.
