Council amends tree ordinance to restrict oak pruning April 15–Sept. 15
Summary
The Village of Michiana council unanimously approved an amendment prohibiting pruning of oak trees between April 15 and Sept. 15 and requiring sanitized tools and application of latex paint to fresh wounds when pruning is necessary; motion passed 5–0 after attorney review was required.
Nancy Thill, speaking for the Tree Board, moved to amend the Village tree ordinance to change the allowable pruning window for oaks, and the council approved the change by a 5–0 roll call vote.
Thill told the council that the amendment will prohibit pruning of trees identified as oaks between April 15 and September 15 and requires that “tools must be sanitized, and a latex based paint must be applied to the wound immediately after pruning” when pruning is necessary. The motion was amended to require review by the Village attorney, Sara Senica, before the change takes effect; the amended motion passed with five ayes and zero nays.
The Tree Board update also noted work by AEP on tree trimming and a completed herbicide application by Pizzo Gardens; a proposed Butterfly Garden seeding plan remains on hold until the December meeting when Pizzo Gardens will present costs and timing.
