Council approves pay increase and staffing change for Fire Department

Public Safety Director Femling recommended promoting two existing Firefighter/EMTs to lieutenant, hiring three new Firefighter/EMTs and increasing the Firefighter/EMT wage range. Femling asked the council to 'move the Firefighter/EMT wages from $42,000 to the $49,000 range' to attract candidates and ensure shifts are covered. Council Member Michelle Griffith moved to accept the recommendation; Council Member Jane Conard seconded and council voted 4‑0 in favor.
Council members said the pay increase would help recruit employees who can live in the North Valley and cover shifts. The motion carried without recorded dissent. Staff will proceed with implementing the pay adjustment and staffing changes as part of the FY2018 budget process.
