Deputy Commissioner Lisa K. Lahiff briefed the committee on recent public-health matters including a Hantavirus notification and community outreach events.
Lahiff said the New York State Department of Health notified the county that a cruise passenger had listed an Orange County address; the person was evaluated and observed at Offutt Airforce Base in Nebraska. Lahiff said Orange County health staff are coordinating with the state to monitor the situation. She also reported a free rabies clinic in the Town of Minisink on May 9 that vaccinated 88 animals (21 cats and 67 dogs) in a two-hour period and thanked volunteers who supported the event.
Lahiff reminded committee members that the county will again require children’s camp staff and campers to show evidence of measles immunization or a positive titer, and she described a May 31 screening partnership at the Warwick VFW Hall and a June 6 men’s health screening to be held at the Healthfirst office in Newburgh.
Committee members did not ask for formal votes on these routine public-health updates but recorded them in the meeting minutes for oversight and follow-up as needed.
