At the May 19 meeting, Lacey Trimble, Commissioner of Social Services and Mental Health, reviewed county activities tied to Mental Health Awareness Month and outlined upcoming suicide-prevention programming.
"May is Mental Health Awareness Month," Trimble said, and staff highlighted recent trainings and events including QPR (Question Persuade Refer) training on May 7, a "Start with a Smile" proclamation, and a Children’s Mental Health Awareness Day event on May 16. Trimble said the county plans a Suicide Prevention Conference on Sept. 22, 2026, and that the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention Out of the Darkness Community Walk will be held Oct. 4 at Greenville Park in Port Jervis. She also reported that the county has distributed 246 naloxone boxes across 58 agencies.
Legislators requested outreach and coordination: Ms. Janet Sutherland asked that department staff present satellite-clinic services to the Board of Education; Trimble agreed. Legislator Jonathan Redeker and others discussed opening the suicide-prevention seminar to clinicians and community members and offering continuing-education credits to expand attendance. Trimble said the target audience includes community members and licensed clinicians and that the session will provide suicide-prevention tool training and continuing education.
The update also noted youth outreach through the ADAC substance-use prevention poster and essay contest, which drew more than 700 submissions and produced seven countywide winners.
