Residents press village as State reviews Stop 42 beach structure

Council member Tim McCarthy said the Village would defer action while the State reviews a structure built at Stop 42, telling residents the council would "step down" pending that review.
During the public-comment period, resident Kathleen Hogan Morrison asked whether the Village was doing anything about the structure. Landowner Caroline Rogers said she applied for permits with EGLE and the Building Department and, she added, "I was not trying to be defensive but I didn’t know I was doing anything wrong." Bill Schutt noted the Village still owns the roads in the area where the structure was built, a fact the council said it will consider as the State review proceeds.
Council members did not take a formal action on the structure at the May 9 meeting; Tim McCarthy said the Village must allow the State process to run its course and "we have to let this play out and couldn’t answer at this time." The Building Inspector reported the structure had been permitted to a different address than where it was built, a permitting detail the Village flagged for follow-up.
The matter remains with the State and EGLE; residents were told individual outreach to EGLE is a personal decision rather than a directive from the Village.
