Michiana council approves HONK paid-parking for non-resident visitors

The Village of Michiana council voted April 11 to adopt HONK, a QR-code-based paid-parking system for non-resident visitors. Tim McCarthy moved to implement the service with a $10-per-hour fee for non-residents; Brian Cassidy seconded and the motion passed unanimously.
John Cherewko of HONK showed how visitors would scan a QR code and pay without downloading an app. The council recorded that HONK charges a 2.9% credit-card transaction fee and would invoice the village $50 per month for the service; HONK would handle all transactions and remit proceeds to Michiana. Police Chief Ryan Layman said the system looked "user friendly and would help with parking around the hall and park." The council directed staff to install signage and to exempt vehicles displaying village parking tags or golf-cart stickers, and said the system can be deactivated during village events.
