Michiana council approves $68,787 John Deere purchase, to use CD and water-bond funds

The Village of Michiana council approved purchasing a John Deere tractor to replace a nearly 30‑year‑old unit, with the purchase financed from a vehicle certificate of deposit and water bond funds. Council discussed two quotes — a John Deere and a Kubota — and approved the John Deere in a motion during the March 14 meeting.
Mike Mumper explained the village has saved for a replacement and that the new tractor will include a backhoe for digging water lines, reducing the need to hire outside contractors. “The company with the John Deere is giving the Village $10,000 trade in on the old tractor,” Mumper said during the discussion; later in the motion the purchase price was recorded as $68,787 (an earlier mention in the discussion listed $68,789). The vehicle CD maturing at the end of May (approximately $20,640) will be cashed out to contribute to the purchase and the remaining $38,149 will be paid from water bond funds, per council motions.
Council voted to authorize the purchase and to cash the CD when it matures; the motions passed on voice vote and a roll call (4 ayes – 0 nays) where recorded for the CD cash-out motion. Officials said delivery could take three to six months, so the purchase will be made from next year’s budgeted reserves.
The council did not amend the current budget in-session and described the purchase as using existing vehicle reserves and water bond proceeds. No additional conditions or amendments to the motion were recorded.
