Minerva board rejects motion to authorize advisory referendum on possible Johnsburg merger

The Minerva Central School District Board of Education voted down a resolution that would have authorized the district to hold a nonbinding advisory referendum on a proposed merger with the Johnsburg Central School District. A motion by Nichole Griffen, seconded by Hayley Killon, failed on a 5-0 roll call.
The resolution presented the merger feasibility study as the basis for seeking public feedback. The motion text stated, 'NOW, THEREFORE, the Minerva Board of Education hereby authorizes the district to hold a nonbinding advisory referendum on the merger issue and directs the District Clerk to schedule the date of the advisory referendum.' The board recorded five "no" votes and the motion was lost 5-0. The board did not schedule an advisory referendum following the vote.
Board members on the prevailing 5-0 vote were recorded as Ron Sanalitro (no), Hayley Killon (no), Nellie R. Halloran (no), Nichole Griffen (no) and Jessica West (no). No further action on the merger date was taken at the Sept. 23 meeting.
