BAR votes it lacks jurisdiction over roughly 10-day late abatement appeal

The board considered an abatement application that the clerk received on March 3, filed about 10 days after the applicable 60-day deadline (Feb. 20). Counsel advised the board the 60-day filing deadline is jurisdictional and that the BAR lacks authority to hear untimely appeals. The board moved that "The Board of Assessment Review has no jurisdiction to act because the appeal was not timely filed," the motion was seconded and the board voted to deny jurisdiction.
The board directed counsel to prepare a written notice to the applicant explaining the jurisdictional basis for the denial; the minutes note the assessor had already denied the original abatement and the board will send the formal notification in writing.
