Elkton approves cemetery parcel swap requiring new fence maintenance

The Elkton Town Council and the Elk Run Cemetery Advisory Commission moved forward with a land swap that exchanges a town-owned triangular parcel of about 4,356 square feet with an adjacent landowner in exchange for that landowner installing and maintaining a new wood fence.
Commissioner Dwight "Gene" Kite explained the proposal to council at a public hearing, saying a citizen proposed purchasing the small parcel and would pay all expenses related to the swap. The Cemetery Advisory Commission voted 5-0 to recommend approval. The council subsequently approved the sale (swap) and authorized the Town Manager to negotiate a contract for Council approval (motion moved by Council member Jan Hensley, seconded by Council member Louis Heidel; vote 5-0).
Council member Rachel Michael noted that the contract and deed will include a maintenance requirement for the fence and said the new wood fence will beautify the cemetery area. The Cemetery Advisory Commission adjourned its meeting after approving the recommendation.
