Millerton declares state of emergency after DPW fire; water system operating, temporary staffing increased

Mayor Jenn Najdek declared a state of emergency after a fire at the village Department of Public Works garage and said the declaration is effective for 30 days and "can be renewed for an additional 30 days." Najdek told the Board of Trustees on Feb. 10 that the village is working with its water engineer to restore well two and that the water system "is up and running and tested constantly."
Trustees moved to authorize emergency measures tied to the incident. The board approved an intermunicipal agreement to borrow highway equipment from Dutchess County and the Town of Amenia to cover DPW and police needs while the village’s equipment is out of service. The board also authorized emergency engineering work (see related article) and approved a temporary personnel-hours increase: Caroline FarrKillmer will move from 30 to 35 hours per week for the duration of the emergency. The personnel motion was made by Trustee Lisa Hermann and seconded by Trustee Matt Soleau and was approved unanimously.
The mayor also said she plans to meet with County Executive Sue Serino to discuss county support for economic development in Millerton as the village responds to the DPW incident. No public comment was recorded during the meeting.
