Lawrenceville mayor discloses IEPA notice, says city will pursue Compliance Commitment Agreement

Mayor Courtney announced at the Dec. 11 meeting that the City of Lawrenceville had received a violation notice from the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency and that IEPA had offered the city an opportunity to enter a Compliance Commitment Agreement to address 15 major violations. He said the city had consulted with HMG Engineering in preparing its response and that steps would be taken to correct the problems.
Courtney said the IEPA report noted the city had one employee responsible for two major plants and the related equipment. Relaying the IEPA finding, Courtney said the agency concluded the City "hadn’t put Utilities Supervisor Tipsword in a place to be successful," but the mayor added he remained confident in Tipsword and was not planning a change in leadership. The council did not take a formal vote on the IEPA matter at the meeting; Courtney indicated the city would proceed with the response process with engineering support.
