Lanark resident presses council to investigate repeated sewage backups at North High Street

Shawna Lott told the Lanark City Council during public comment on May 5 that her home at 125 North High Street has experienced repeated sewage backups since she purchased the property in 2022, most recently a flood she described as two feet of sewage that destroyed her furnace and water heater. She said she installed a check valve two years ago after working with the maintenance department but continued to experience failures and questioned whether the nearby lift station is functioning and alerting as required by EPA standards.
Council members acknowledged Lott’s account and said staff would research the lift station and drainage conditions; Alderperson Brad Knutti told Lott he would be in touch. The complaint included a stated out-of-pocket replacement cost for a furnace of about $5,000. The council did not take formal action at the meeting but recorded the concern and listed the item for follow-up research and possible operational inspection of the lift station and related alarms.
