The Village of Lansing Human Relations Commission confirmed plans for the MLK Unity Brunch scheduled for Jan. 17, 2026, reporting that "there are 181 registered as of right now," Chairperson McDaniels said during the meeting.
Set-up is planned for Friday, Jan. 16, at 7 p.m., and McDaniels said the commission will prioritize volunteers at "the registration table and the buffet table," roles she described as most important for the event. Mayor Hardy and his wife, Kathy, and Trustee Micaela Smith volunteered to help with set-up; McDaniels, Commissioner Dust and Commissioner Grzych are slated to serve as the event MCs.
McDaniels also said the Lansing Police Department will run security for the brunch. The commission noted a rehearsal on Friday night after set-up and discussed limiting attendance to those who registered first, with potential walk-ins admitted if space allows.
The commission did not finalize staffing assignments during the meeting; members said additional planning and volunteer sign-ups will continue ahead of the event.
