Residents raised concerns about hazardous, vacant properties adjacent to occupied homes at the July 28 Committee of the Whole meeting. Resident Brandon Wirtjes described problems his family experiences living next to a vacant home and urged the village to act. President Steve Buss said the village attorney and chief of police are reviewing options for each parcel.
Buss said once a property is inspected the owner would have 30 days to correct violations; if the property is not brought into compliance the village could proceed with demolition and place a lien on the property to recover costs. Trustees noted that pursuing demolition would require a change in the budget to cover upfront demolition expenses; no demolition decision was made at the meeting.
