Village discusses reapplying for Safe Routes to School grant after narrow miss

Village staff told trustees the community will reapply for the federal Safe Routes to School grant, with the application window this year running Aug. 1 through Oct. 13, 2025. Brian Nott said the Village missed the award by 0.04 points in a prior round and that Fehr Graham has charged $5,500 the first time and $3,500 for subsequent applications; the firm would handle correspondence with schools, a walkability study and parent/teacher surveys. The last available grant amount mentioned in the meeting rose from $200,000 to $250,000.
Nott said engineering and design fees are not covered by the grant; he described the proposed scope as a sidewalk from Fremont Street to the Lions Park entrance and said he would ask whether the $3,500 application fee could be credited toward engineering costs if the village wins an award. Notice of award was described as expected in April–May 2026. The board did not take a formal vote on submitting the application during the July 28 meeting.
