Rankin board discusses discipline data, staffing shortfalls, athletics and building projects ahead of school year

During the June 23 meeting Dr. Matt Gordon presented data on student discipline showing total detentions in 2024–25 were slightly above the seven-year average but that in-school and out-of-school suspension totals and the number of different students involved in ISS/OSS were lower than the seven-year average.
Dr. Gordon told the board the district projects 204 students for 2025–26 and said the district may struggle to recruit the number of paraprofessionals needed next year; he committed to reporting back with options at the July meeting. He also proposed initiating a memorandum of understanding with the Rankin Association of Teachers to post an additional Track and Field Coach (seeking someone with field-events experience and willingness to assist at meets); the board gave consensus to pursue contact and post the anticipated opening.
On facilities, Dr. Gordon said updates on a proposed solar-power project were limited but that work was hoped for this summer; he said the track repair project was expected to occur in the near future and that he would keep the board updated. The board also discussed banking options and said staff would continue meetings with local banks before making a recommendation.
