Fire staff outline prescribed burns near Spring Creek gun range and Soldier Canyon

Fire-district staff told the Elko County Board of Fire Commissioners that several prescribed burns are planned this year to reduce fuels near populated-use areas and stop potential fires from spreading into vulnerable terrain.
An agency official said one burn is planned around the Spring Creek Association gun range; the district improved an access road last year, mowed along it and plans to 'black line' and burn a buffer "probably, 50 or more feet around there so that it creates a larger buffer," the official said. The official also identified a Jigs-area burn that likely will be pushed to the fall and another near Lemoyne by Soldier Canyon. Staff said open burning would probably remain allowed through at least the third week of June, after which officials will evaluate burn windows day by day.
Commissioner Rand asked whether the burn strategy would create weed problems; staff said herbicide treatments would be applied concurrently to mitigate weeds. The remarks were presented as operational updates; no formal board action was recorded on the burns during this meeting.
