Rankin CSD 98 adopts FY25 amended budget and approves FY26 tentative budget

The Rankin School District #98 Board of Education voted unanimously on June 23 to adopt the 2024–25 Amended Budget and to approve the 2025–26 Tentative Budget.
Superintendent Dr. Matt Gordon presented the Amended Budget and said, "It has been a positive fiscal year thus far with limited unforeseen circumstances occurring." He noted the Amended Budget currently shows deficit spending of $62,059 but explained that excluded project expenses (the 2024 Paving Improvements Project) and some recently received or anticipated revenues are expected to move the district into a surplus for FY25 once final accounting is complete. The auditor recommended transferring funds from the Education Fund to the Capital Projects fund to pay paving expenditures; Dr. Gordon said that transfer was made for the paving project.
On the FY26 Tentative Budget, Dr. Gordon said the plan was constructed conservatively, "estimating revenues lower and expenditures higher." He told the board the projection includes a planned $100,000 allocation for adoption of a new math curriculum and a $100,000 allocation for one replacement HVAC rooftop unit (RTU) for the 2004 Addition. He noted some FY26 expenses were paid in FY25 and that the auditor again recommended an Education Fund transfer to Capital Projects should the district choose to fund the HVAC in that way; any such transfer could appear in the Original Budget in September.
The board adopted the FY25 Amended Budget (motion by Member Kohl; second by Member Helfers) and the FY26 Tentative Budget (motion by Member Cox; second by Member Lowman) on roll call votes of 6-0. The board also set a public hearing on the FY26 Original Budget for Monday, Sept. 22, 2025, at 6:30 p.m. at the district meeting room.
