Elko County drill 'went really well,' officials say; communications gaps identified

Deputy Chief Daniel Hassett, Elko County EMS, told the Local Emergency Planning Committee that the recent GBC exercise "went really well, and everyone participated," praising participation by mines, city and county fire, police and the bomb squad.
Hassett said the drill exposed several issues, chiefly in communications, that the committee plans to address over the coming year. "We did find some issues that need to work, mostly communication around the communication area, but we'll be working on that and hopefully getting that handled in the next year," he said. Committee members agreed to schedule follow-up training and to prioritize fixes in next year’s exercises.
The drill provided hands-on experience with equipment and interagency coordination, Hassett said; attendees noted that some specialized assets were available but not fully utilized, and that additional joint training would improve response. The committee did not take any formal action at the meeting but flagged the topic for future planning and training sessions.
