NDOW updates: bighorn and elk captures, fish stocking and enforcement activity in Elko region

Nevada Department of Wildlife staff updated the CAB on multiple regional projects. Travis Allen said the department is starting bighorn-sheep captures and will soon begin a targeted summer elk-capture and collaring effort to investigate seasonal elk mortality syndrome (SEMS) across several management areas.
"We're starting our big summer elk capture, first time collaring elk during the summer months in Nevada to further investigate SEMS," Travis Allen said, describing a statewide approach that targets multiple management areas for comparison and liver biopsies.
Fisheries supervisor Cody Baron reported extensive stocking and habitat work: 1,000 wipers were successfully stocked at Wild Horse this year and 5,000 catfish were stocked at Wild Horse and 2,000 at Willow Creek; standardized electrofishing surveys at South Fork Reservoir showed strong populations of largemouth and smallmouth bass and catfish.
Law enforcement supervisor Jason Jackson said wardens seized about 130 antlers from two nonresident camps this season and issued multiple citations, and that the division recently hired seven game wardens statewide with training upcoming.
NDOW staff also described coordination with NDOT on a Dumpty-area highway wildlife mitigation project (design phase nearing completion) and upcoming volunteer opportunities for guzzler builds and fence projects.
