County Manager Thomas Weaver used the July 28 work session to outline several tourism and SPLOST-funded projects staff recommends advancing.
Weaver said Hotel/Motel funding (balance noted as $813,251) could be used to repair a worn room in City Hall and convert it to a visitor welcome center that the Chamber or other groups could use. At Riverbend Park he proposed building a fishing pier to expand recreational access beyond the existing boat dock and discussed creating usable campsites with electric hookups and mound septic systems to attract overnight visitors. He said the county would seek quotes for a dock and campsite power/water options and examine a hostess or part‑time weekend staff position to support increased visitation.
On recreation SPLOST, Weaver proposed a small restroom facility and a water-fountain station at the King Street basketball court. He noted SPLOST collections had already exceeded $500,000 in 2025 and urged the commission to approve moving forward with project quotes while funds are available.
No formal construction contracts were authorized at the session; Weaver asked commissioners to place the projects on the next meeting agenda for formal approvals once quotes and plans are prepared.
