Commission recommends proposed 9.504 millage rate; public hearings rescheduled

The Commission of the Unified Government of Cusseta‑Chattahoochee County voted unanimously Sept. 2 to recommend a proposed millage rate of 9.504, an increase of 1.25 mills over the prior rate of 8.254.
County Manager Thomas Weaver told commissioners the recommendation is not the final setting of the rate and provided an example of the local impact: "With a homestead property of a fair market value of $100,000 it would be an estimated increase of $50.00 a year," Weaver said. The motion to recommend the proposed rate passed unanimously.
The commission initially announced public hearings for the proposed rate on Sept. 17 and Sept. 24, but staff later said the notice in the newspaper did not meet Department of Revenue requirements. At a Sept. 22 work session Weaver said hearings were rescheduled to Oct. 1 (10 a.m. and 6 p.m.) and Oct. 8 (10 a.m.) to correct the advertising; final adoption will follow the required hearings and any required publication. The commission emphasized the Sept. 2 vote was a recommendation and that a called meeting will follow the final hearing for the formal vote.
