Commission approves updated roads infrastructure tax plan and opts for multi‑tool equipment over expensive sweeper

Elko County staff presented an updated roads infrastructure tax plan that includes historical context and clearer project explanations. Road Superintendent Dennis Price explained the plan supports annual road work and equipment replacement and described a proposal to buy two smaller multifunction units rather than a single high‑maintenance street sweeper.

Price said the department can accomplish sweeping, debris pickup and grinding of rock using a self‑propelled broom plus a skid steer with attachments, which provides flexibility across rural roads and reduces maintenance compared with a single $400,000 sweeper. Commissioners discussed fund balances (staff noted the fund has built balances in early years), the $500,000 annual allocation to cities and the plan's split between roads and public‑safety infrastructure. Commissioner (speaker 2) moved to approve the updated format and plan and the motion carried on a voice vote.

The board favored the new presentation format because it provides history and context to help prioritize projects going forward; staff will implement the approved equipment and project priorities within the existing infrastructure fund.
