County discusses $68,152 radio equipment quote for sheriff; vendor presentation requested

At the Dec. 22 work session staff reviewed a preliminary quote for upgrading public-safety radios and equipment. County Manager Thomas Weaver said the quote covered equipment for the sheriff's department and listed a figure of $68,152 for the hardware; he also said handheld radios could cost roughly $7,000 to $8,000 each and that the presented quote did not address the fire department's needs.
Commissioners asked staff to bring both the sheriff and a vendor representative to the next regular meeting to explain the system, the procurement path and the total cost implications before any vote. Weaver noted potential benefits (reduced maintenance on outdated repeaters or towers) as well as the downside of high per-unit handheld costs for departments that also need radios.
No procurement decision was made at the work session; the board requested a fuller presentation so it could weigh operational impacts, costs and cross-department needs.
