County to pass GFL residential trash-rate increase to customers starting January

County Manager Thomas Weaver told commissioners at the Oct. 27 work session that private hauler GFL has raised residential trash collection rates by $2 and added a $14 monthly charge for an extra container. The county had been absorbing the extra cost but will pass the increase to residents beginning with January water bills; Weaver said the county will absorb the first month’s increase and then include the fee on utility statements thereafter.
Weaver attributed the rate change to higher landfill tipping fees, saying that tipping fees "have doubled" and that the increase is the primary driver. In response to a question from Chairman Charles Coffey, Weaver said the rate change is unrelated to the recycle center and that, despite the increase, GFL’s rates remain competitive with neighboring jurisdictions.
