Residents urge reopening of Lakeview Road after wildfire risk cited

David Everest, a resident of 98 Lake Estates, told the Siskiyou County Board of Supervisors that his neighborhood has only one way in and one way out and that a recent fire left residents vulnerable. "We really desperately need Lakeview Road open," Everest said during public comment, adding that "people would have died" if winds had shifted.
Maureen Autry, another local resident, urged supervisors to visit the site and described seeded areas that she said have become overgrown and could carry fire rapidly through neighboring ranches. She asked the board to press property owners or the fire warden to provide residents with a gate code or otherwise restore resident access for emergencies. "If an ambulance needs to get through there, they've gotta go around 15 more extra miles right now," Autry said, noting the public-safety implications.
The comments were delivered during the meeting's public-comment period; no formal action on Lakeview Road was taken at the session. Board members did not debate the request on the record during the remainder of the meeting. Residents said they provided a filmed record of the site to the clerk for staff review and asked the county to investigate options that would preserve private-property restrictions while granting residents emergency access.
Next steps were not announced; the board moved on to consent and departmental items following public comment.
