Work session: county reapplies for sewer and Rails-to-Trails grants; water-tank cleaning and recreation updates reported

During the June 23 work session County Manager Thomas Weaver reported two grant reapplications: one for a sewer project and another for a walking trail under Rails-to-Trails. Weaver said the county has a 'decent shot' at both grants and will keep the commission informed of progress.
Weaver also updated commissioners that Water Tank 1 was cleaned by US Tank on June 17 and that 68 locates had been completed; he noted Columbus Water Works employee John Otto is retiring and will be replaced by Ken Barbour. Audits with David McCoy are ongoing but delayed due to prior auditors not responding, Weaver said. Recreation Director Mordie Askew reported the county splashpad is operating and fall youth football registration has begun.
Work-session discussion included community concern over charging for construction-and-demolition (C&D) disposal at the recycling center; staff outlined current rules (no charge for household garbage for customers with active water accounts, a fee for business customers and for large C&D loads) and agreed to pursue outreach to donation partners (Goodwill, Salvation Army or local clothing programs) and improved signage. Commissioners also decided to use a cardboard bin rather than immediately purchasing a compactor.
