Chief Kelly said the department has had long waits for some vehicle models and has experienced mechanical problems with its Dodge Durangos. "We came across a Ford Explorer, a 2025 Ford Explorer at Sutton Commercial and Fleet, dealership, which is in Matson, IL," Chief Kelly said. He added the price quoted was "47,413," and that the department plans to sell the replaced vehicle — a 2016 Ford Taurus with about 20,000 miles — rather than trade it in.
Committee members asked whether the vehicle would be used by the school resource officer; Chief Kelly said the department would reassign an existing unmarked car to the school resource officer and place the Explorer into patrol to test it. He also warned that interior equipment from current vehicles will not transfer: "The stuff from the Taurus won't fit in the Explorer, of course," Chief Kelly said, meaning the department must buy new mounts, seats and other inside equipment.
A committee member moved to approve the purchase and another seconded the motion. The chair called for the roll call and the motion passed; the transcript records affirmative responses and the committee approved forwarding the purchase to the council.
