Board member offers timber-thinning and EQIP grant options to property owner
Summary

At the close of the appeal discussion, Jim Palouseau (speaker 3) advised the property owner that there were two practical ways to address heavy, mature timber and reduce fire risk: contract a logger to remove roughly 10% of trees, or seek funding through the EQIP program administered by the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS). Palouseau explained how EQIP can pay for thinning work and suggested contacting NRCS to apply.
Palouseau also described the market value of fir and practical considerations for a thinning contract, saying a logging contractor could remove a portion of trees and the owner could be paid for that timber. He framed both options as potentially improving safety and the utility of the parcel but noted they would not change the board's valuation determination at the hearing.
