Sheriff: radio dead zones force deputies to alter responses and raise safety concerns

Sheriff Dave Daniel told the Board that the communications deficiencies have “directly affected Sheriff’s Office operations and deputy safety,” saying deputies know and work around known dead zones and adjust how they deploy personnel in those areas.
Daniel told commissioners he supports restoring immediate capability where feasible while moving forward with a comprehensive replacement that addresses the County’s most serious coverage gaps. Commissioners heard that Community Justice and Public Works staff reported similar dead zones affecting probation officers and road crews in remote valleys and mountain areas.
The board directed staff to include operational user needs in the upcoming project scope so that employee safety, lone-worker coverage, and transport routes are considered when evaluating sites and supplemental technologies.
