Select Board authorizes up to $59,000 for Town Hall ladies' bathroom remodel

Town manager Arthur presented a bid for a Town Hall ladies' bathroom remodel on Aug. 4 and the Select Board authorized the town manager to pay up to $59,000 to complete the work.
Arthur said the contractor’s estimate for plumbing upgrades, stall replacement, flooring, ceiling and electrical work totaled $58,334. He proposed funding $13,000 from the bathroom CIP and $46,000 from the building CIP, which would leave approximately $13,742 in the building CIP after the project. Board members asked about the bid process; Arthur said the town went out to bid and that only one contractor responded and that the vendor had completed prior work for the town. Members cautioned that hidden plumbing work could increase the cost once contractors open the floor, and Arthur acknowledged that unknowns could arise given the age of the building.
The Chair moved to authorize the town manager to pay up to $59,000 for the project; the motion was seconded and approved by the board. Arthur said the remodel will take the ladies' restroom out of service for about a week and staff will secure the men's restroom as a unisex facility during that time to maintain public access.
The board noted the project will address several longstanding facility issues, and staff said coordination and signage will minimize disruption during construction.
