Fire board approves purchase of used fire-engine chassis to speed replacement

The Elko County Fire District Board voted to approve D1, a purchase of a used four-door firefighter chassis for $70,000 with authorization of up to $5,000 for shipping and up to $25,000 for paint and remount materials. The board said funds for the purchase will come from the fire district grant funds, contract revenue and reimbursable items.
Fire Chief Brian said the chassis was located through a national cooperative and appears in good condition, and he emphasized the practical need to move quickly because of manufacturing delays. "This is a 4 door chassis that we found through a group that recently joined NPP, which is a national purchasing a cooperative purchasing group...The current build time for a brand new fire engine is about 48 to 72 months out," he said.
A commissioner noted shortages in new fire trucks and moved to approve the purchase; another commissioner seconded the motion. With no public comment, the board approved the purchase by voice vote. The chief and board said the purchase will allow the district to replace an inoperable chassis more quickly than waiting for a new build.
