Firefighter union official urges council to honor contracts, questions city attorney pay

Don Friedes, who identified himself as secretary of Professional Firefighters Local 616, told the Common Council that city employees are being unfairly blamed for the citys financial problems and urged the city to honor negotiated contracts. "The very least the city can do is honor our contract," Friedes said.
Friedes said union members have negotiated in good faith for pay and benefits and said the administrations actions have removed benefits and contributed to rising legal fees. He said he filed a Freedom of Information Law request that was not fully responded to and questioned how Attorney Raimondo is being paid when the budget line for the city attorney shows zero. The council did not take immediate action on Friedes remarks during the public-comment period.
