Common Council adopts local law to abandon part of Deer Street for Save A Lot redevelopment

The Common Council on January evening adopted Local Law No. 1-2026, authorizing the discontinuance and abandonment of a portion of the Deer Street extension adjacent to the Save A Lot Plaza. Clerk Dobek called the roll and all members present voted ‘‘Aye,’’ and the law was declared adopted.
Tom Hagner, owner of the Save A Lot Shopping Center, told the council the abandonment will allow the shopping center and a nearby apartment project to share improved parking and simplify plowing. A city staff member outlined next steps, saying the mayor will hold a mayoral hearing within 30 days, the law will be filed with the Secretary of State, and the city will negotiate conveyance at fair market value determined by the assessor. The staff member described the private project as roughly $40 million, with about 35 one- and two-bedroom units, a daycare, funding from housing tax credits and other revitalization funds, and 10% of units reserved for veterans.
