Clarence board requires exact cash for tax payments as pennies phase out

"Resolve the town board that the tax bill payments paid in cash must be the exact amount of tax bill and that we further resolve that this resolution shall take effect immediately," Supervisor Castillo read into the record. The board then voted "Aye" to carry the resolution.
During questions, the official explaining the policy said taxpayers will not be able to rely on the town to make change after the town's penny supply is exhausted. "So you either have to pay by check or pay by exact cash," the official said, adding, "I am not allowed to round up or round down." That clarification underscored the board's stated reason for the policy: without new pennies from banks or the Mint, the tax collector cannot provide change.
The resolution, as announced, takes effect immediately. The board did not provide a timetable for how long the town's supply of pennies will last; the official said the current supply will be used until exhausted and that residents should prepare to pay exact change or use noncash methods.
