County executive says talks underway to study shared services and municipal consolidation possibilities

County executive Wendell told the Common Council and residents that regional elected officials have begun discussing shared services and the idea of merging municipal functions in the North County as a way to study long-term fiscal sustainability. He emphasized the discussion is preliminary and that the process would be transparent and led by elected officials, not the county acting unilaterally.
Wendell said officials plan to work with the Center for Governmental Research (CGR) to develop questions and research options and stressed that any changes would require public input and are not guaranteed. “This isn't done behind closed doors,” he told the council, adding that the effort is intended to identify whether shared services or mergers make sense over a 10- to 20-year horizon.
