High school seeks new AP, finance and arts electives; DECA enrollment cited

Assistant Superintendent Drew Bordner and Principal Bobbi Jo Stoner presented an array of high-school course proposals at the Jan. 9 Curriculum Committee meeting, seeking committee review before forwarding them to the Board for formal approval.
Among the proposals, officials described AP Business with Personal Finance as a year‑long course intended to count toward the Michigan Merit Curriculum. "The course is intended to provide students with essential knowledge and skills to support career development and responsible financial decision-making and count toward the Michigan Merit Curriculum (MMC)," the packet states. Stoner also noted participation in DECA: "Gull Lake has more than 90 students currently participating in DECA."
Other proposed courses include AP Spanish Language and Culture (to phase out Spanish 4 beginning in 2027–28), Broadway! (a survey course with no performance requirement), DECA Success Strategies (for grades 10–12), Math 9 Essentials (targeted support), Strength & Fitness Female Focus, Studio Theatre, Unscripted (storytelling and improvisation), and two personal finance course options. The committee reviewed the materials but did not record final adoption at the Jan. 9 meeting; proposals will be presented to the Board for formal action.
