Board reviews Miller Johnson policy updates, including device limits and new safety requirements

David N. Turner, Chair of the Policy/Board Governance Committee, led a first reading of Miller Johnson’s March 2025 recommended updates to district policy. Items highlighted included a student policy option for "away-for-the-day" cell phone restrictions; Facilities & Operations policies that would require a Behavior Threat Assessment and Management Team by Oct. 1, 2026 (Policy 6002); an annual distribution of firearm safe-storage information beginning Oct. 1, 2025 (Policy 6003); and the adoption of standardized emergency response terminology starting in the 2026–27 school year (Policy 6004). The updates also expand ADA and Section 504 guidance to clarify permission and procedures for therapy animals in schools.
Turner said the recommendations will return to the Policy/Board Governance Committee for further discussion. "Policy 6002: Requires districts to implement a Behavior Threat Assessment and Management Team by October 1, 2026," Turner reported as part of the first-reading summary to the Board.
