Circuit court urges county support after Supreme Court recommends four more judges

Chief Judge Jeff Mattis, of the Oakland County Circuit Court, told the finance committee the Michigan Supreme Court—oncluded the county needs four additional circuit court judges and recommended the change in its judicial resource report. He said the recommendation is data-driven and that adding seats requires action in Lansing, governor approval, and local planning for courtrooms and staff.
Mattis described options to address caseload pressure in the near term, including continuing use of visiting judges and working with county facilities staff on potential space created by other offices moving. "At the end of the study, they concluded that we need 4 additional circuit court judges," he said, noting the change would also require courtrooms, staff and financial planning. He asked commissioners for support in outreach to state legislators and in local planning for courtroom space and personnel.
